I think so much of the outlook over fandom would change if many people treated it like it is: a goddamn hobby.
A fandom group is no better nor more revolutionary than a knitting club. It can replicate any real world biases and discriminations and it can also be used to raise money/group people towards causes. It can foster connections that will turn to actual real political action or it can just be a gathering of people who don’t know much about each other outside of it.
It can be lovely to experience when you’re surrounded by a lovely group and it can be hell when the group is full of cattiness and pettiness . It can be inclusive or it can be exclusive when you’re surrounded by bigotry.
Because it’s a group of people - it’s going to have problems. And when there’s a conflict or people are pointing shit out, it needs to be solved so its members aren’t spit out in the sake of “avoiding drama”. Because it’s a group of people, it’s not automatically changing the world in a blaze of self grandeur. Because it’s a group of people with a common hobby, it can impact its members lives for the better and give them a space to express themselves.
Fandom is a goddamn knitting club. It’s not this inherent great, subversive force of good nor this den of evil that’s traumatisizing the children. Chill out.

I think one of the most frustrating things about modern conservatives is when they hate something for the wrong reason. And then you have to defend something you also hate.

-gotta be Excited About It (ADHD brain only does things if they’re Literally the Most Interesting Thing Happening Right Now) (so like, hype yourself up to work on a project, or think about how happy you’ll be with a cleaner room/all those chores done)
-gotta have small, doable first step (like, “get cloth from fabric drawer” or “open google docs”
-FUCK distractions (computer is in drawer, phone is Off)
-Engage the Senses (if task needs Brain, play vague background Music, if task needs No Brain, listen to audiobook/podcast)
-maybe set time limit so i don’t get lost??? e.g. i have a little egg timer that i use because the ticking isn’t distracting but is enough to remind me that Time is a Thing that is Passing Right Now
-gotta have Self Awareness and Thinky about the Moment (get into the habit of Consciously Noticing what you’re doing at the moment, so you’re more likely to go “wait, this isn’t what i wanted to be doing” and be able to redirect)
-be willing to redirect and try to do something else if whatever you want to do Just Isn’t Happening
-DON’T beat yourself up for only doing part of something, or failing entirely- all that does is make your brain associate “trying to do stuff” with “well that SUCKED”. Which means you don’t want to try again. Tell urself u did good for trying, and if it didn’t work, try again later, or figure out why it didn’t work and try a different way. Reward yourself for trying
this is what i’ve figured out about cajoling the Thinky No Worky Brain into Doing Stuff. it’s not 100% reliable, especially if I forget to do some of these things (like SLEEP), but it’s what i got, ya know??

Actually I’ll never forgive Punk Rave and Killstar and fast fashion brands for tricking people into thinking that being goth or punk or emo is expensive. Babygirl the only goth brand names you need to know are Rit, Good Will, Etsy, and Studs and Spikes, we used to shove safety pins through our ears and then they started selling earrings that look like safety pins for 15.99. We used to dye thrifted wedding dresses black and they started selling gothic gowns for 300 bucks. We used to put studs on boots we found in the back of the good will and they started making Demonias. DIY or die wasn’t perfect it can be exclusionary to disabled people but whatever the fuck we’ve got going on right now is so much worse. It’s not any more inclusive to the disabled and it is exclusionary to the people who made punk, to the people who made goth, to the people who made emo. If you’ve got the funds and you don’t want to do diy pay someone else to do it for you but please let it be a small artist or a friend not some guy in a suit who’s made it his business to gentrify punk. You can turn flats into platforms with flipflops, hotglue and gumption don’t let anyone tell you different.

all of this just makes it more difficult for people to learn what subcultures are actually about/for (community, around shared music, values and events that you make, etc). considering so many ppl just grow up without any actual subculture around them they go from watching movies and seeing magazines selling them fashion/visuals, to assuming that that’s what subculture IS. which would be natural for someone pretty young. but like…this doesn’t help anyone get out of that phase of misunderstanding. ugh.
I started making punk diy videos on TikTok bc kids kept saying “I’m too poor to be punk” baby I have not bought clothes new in my whole adult life. I make pins out of bottle caps and chains out of pop tabs. Punk is FROM poverty.
